Engineering Serenity

The Challenge:
Psychiatric recovery, especially for patients preparing for discharge ("exiters"), requires a transition from a controlled clinical environment back to the complex sensory world. Traditional mindfulness can be difficult for patients to maintain under cognitive load or environmental distraction.

The Solution:
Angry Shiba Studio developed a Clinical Immersive Therapy Suite that provides a sensory buffer. In collaboration with the CUHK Nursing Department, we engineered three targeted modular interventions—Body Scan, Stretching, and Observation—designed to regulate the nervous system and promote physical calm through total immersion.

The Engineering of Presence:
We moved beyond "360 videos" to create high-fidelity, interactive spatial environments inspired by tranquil global locations:

  • Tung Lung Chau (HK): Local familiarity for grounding.
  • Fuji Lake & Nikko (Japan): Cultural "escapism" to break clinical monotony.

The Human Side of the Tech:
Our interventions are designed around the Human Sensory System:

  1. Body Scan: Guiding neurological focus to release physical tension.
  2. Kinesthetic Stretching: Blending intentional physical movement with virtual spatial awareness to relieve psychomotor agitation.
  3. Sensory Observation: A pioneering module set in a Nikko Onsen. We integrated Mindful Eating by engineering a virtual interaction with a crisp apple. Users engage their sight, touch, and simulated taste to anchor themselves in the present moment.

The Impact:
The application has been officially integrated into the PYNEH Psychiatric Ward. It serves as a vital tool for patients undergoing the discharge protocol, helping them master self-regulation before returning to reality. We are not just creating an "escape"; we are building the mental muscle memory required for real-world stability.
